There is a simple but bizarre explanation of the Hill episode, Subliminal Distraction. Barney was a postal worker. The Post Office does not use Cubicle Level Protection.

Subliminal Distraction, a normal feature in our physiology of sight, was discovered to be a problem when it caused mental breaks for office workers. The cubicle was deigned to deal with the vision startle reflex to prevent the episodes by 1968.

There are facts not included in the ongoing story of this incident. For instance Barney and Betty had a rental apartment on their property. There was always some one there to witness supposed alien visitations to them. None were.

The incident of the blue earrings left in a pile of withered leaves on the kitchen table is a case in point. The aliens were supposed to have returned Betty's earrings. Someone was playing practical jokes on the Hills.
