The news out around the world this morning is that Julian Assange is arrested. Julian Assange, the public face of WikiLeaks, has been arrested Tuesday Morning in London at the request of authorities in Sweden.
The arrest is only for questioning regarding the sexual assault allegations, but most observers agree that the allegations seem a bit convenient as a cause for arrest at a time when most western governments wanted him arrested for the classified leaks published on his website, WikiLeaks.
According to news reports, Assange voluntarily surrendered and is willingly facing the allegations against him. The 39 year old will likely be expedited to Sweden to face the allegations made against him by two women who say they were sexually assaulted by Assange. Julian affirms that the liaisons were completely consensual.
Hints of Cold War Intelligence Tactics as Julian Assange Arrested
Whenever one hears of sex charges against someone that is in an active position of what is essentially intelligence warfare against western nations, it brings about very clear recollections of the tactics organizations like the CIA and KGB perfected during the Cold War.
For example, British agent Elizabeth Thorpe used her affair with Charles Brousse of the French Embassy to access heavily guarded Vichy French naval ciphers during WWII.
According to H. Keith Melton, technical adviser to U.S. intelligence services, the former KGB Major General Oleg Kalugin was fond of saying, “In Soviet times we often asked our men to stand up and serve their country, but for a few beautiful women, we asked they serve by lying down.”
Is it possible that Western governments are once again using sex in their intelligence war against Assange, who we can be certain they consider a significant threat to the national security of the United States?
Other cases of using sex as a weapon during the Cold War included:
- ->Putting targets in sexually comprising situations and then using blackmail to access intelligence
- ->British KGB agent John Symonds would seduce American women in U.S. embassies and use them to access national secrets during the 1970s
- ->Katrina Leung, famously known as the “Parlor Maid,” seduced two American FBI agents over 20 years in order to extract sensitive information
Assange has decided to face the charges head on with a team of lawyers. His lawyers say that they believe the U.S. has been pushing the case forward in order to harass and silence Julian and put an end to WikiLeaks.
In November 2010, Swedish authorities issued the international arrest warrant.
Julian Assange Arrested – The Actual Charges
The above reference to Cold War tactics is not to imply that the two women are western spies. In fact most of the evidence implies that they are not. However, the Cold War tactics typically used by CIA and KGB espionage efforts led to a culture within most world intelligence agencies to utilize any sexual improprieties as a weapon against any intelligence target.
If you’re curious what the actual charges involved and how serious they were (or weren’t), here are the details from the police reports.
Anna Ardin is the first woman. She helped Assange with a speaking engagement in Sweden and even let him stay in her flat in Stockholm. They had dinner together and then had “sexual relations” back at her flat. The condom split. She felt that the accident was deliberate and wanted him to have an STD test, which he refused.
The other woman, who’s identity is being kept private, met Assange at a conference organized by Ardin. They were at a group dinner together when they started to flirt with one another. The couple then went shopping alone together, and later in the evening saw the film Deep Sea.
The flirtations continued to the point where they moved to the rear of the theater. A few days later they met again and decided to spend the night together at her apartment. The woman complained that during the drive to the apartment, Assange “paid more attention to the computer than to me”.
When they arrived at the flat, she complains that the attraction had worn off. The section of the police report providing details about what happened in the flat were blanked out. Sources told media outlets that the couple had intercourse without a condom, against her wishes that he wear one.
According to the police report, the couple even had breakfast together the next morning and they parted as friends. He told the woman he would call, and he never did.
Once she and Ardin met and exchanged stories about Assange, they mutually decided they were concerned about pregnancy and STDs, and confronted Assange to take an STD test. He again refused. Then women then decided to go to police.
And that, my friends, is the whole story about the alleged “sex charges” against Assange.
American media outlets may not provide many of the details regarding the charges (I had to gather these details from Australian and UK news sources) – but you can get it here at Top Secret Writers.
