As a nation at odds with several surrounding nations and numerous paramilitary groups, not to mention non-violent protest organizations, spying in Israel is an offense that is dealt with harshly. Life sentences are common even for minor levels of information gathering.

Most recently, a man named as Ameer Makhoul, a well-known activist against Arabic discrimination in Israel, has been sentenced to nine years in jail for spying. He was found guilty of sending information (such as size and exact locations) about Israeli military installations to Hamas, a Lebanese militant organization.

This information could have been used to launch rocket attacks against Israeli military outposts from Gaza and to assist Hamas operatives within Israel to plan bombings.

Amir Makoul also agreed to plead guilty to the charges in return for more serious allegations being dropped. This undoubtedly made his sentence of nine years much lighter than what it could have been.

Arabs and Muslims in general are often heavily discriminated against in Israel and viewed in many areas as outsiders. This has led to many individuals deciding to go against mainstream Israeli society and even assist enemies of the state.

While tough anti-spy measures do have some success in thwarting plans and hindering recruitment by militant organizations, it’s an almost impossible task to stop it all together, while huge sections of the population feel oppressed and singled out.
