China Begins Attempting to Cleanse Reports of Attempted Coup

As we reported last week, there were reports of shootings in China. Rumors started spreading that the violence was an attempted coup made after the removal of Bo Xilai from government when Communist Leaders started to fear his popular rise to power.

In recent days, there have been scattered reports that is “down” in China. The site will be accessible again for a few hours, and then it gets blocked again. We believe that this effort to block foreign reports of the attempted coup is part of a larger cleanup effort by the Chinese government to cleanse all media reports about the event – not to mention the successful efforts of Bo Xilai and his aids to help the people of Chongqing.

Beijing has attempted to smear Bo’s name by accusing him of corruption, however Bo may very well be the cleanest politician in the party – and the people of Chongqing – as well as the rest of China – know the truth, even though they are not allowed to speak or write about it.

Any Chinese citizen caught telling the truth about Bo Xilai, or reporting any news to the outside world about the attempted Coup, has seen their websites or blogs “cleansed” of the information by the Chinese government. External websites that caught wind of the news and reported it to the world, have had their domains blocked so that Chinese citizens can’t read about it.

China may feel that controlling what the Chinese people read will control their hearts and minds, but the one small fact they are forgetting about human beings, is that memory is long when it comes to wrongdoing. The people will remember what China did to Bo Xilai.

An Orwellian Analysis

With this effort – Chinese leaders are conducting the same sort of white-washing that George Orwell described in his novel 1984, when he wrote:

“And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed-if all records told the same tale-then the lie passed into history and became truth. ‘Who controls the past’ ran the Party slogan, ‘controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.”

What the Party forgets is that people do not forget. Citizens do not forget – and you can not whitewash memories of those citizens. The ones outside the Party – Orwell refers to those in his novel as “proles” – represent the only hope to all of the citizens of China ever experiencing true freedom; Freedom of expression, Freedom of religion, Freedom to pursue equal rights – and so much more.

Orwell described the hope of the proles as follows:

“If there was hope, it must lie in the proles, because only there, in those swarming disregarded masses, eighty-five percent of the population of Oceania, could the force to destroy the Party ever be generated.”

There was a small hope that the son would be a better leader than the father, but China’s current leader has shown that he isn’t capable of producing the sort of progress toward human rights and equality that the people of China need in order to truly become a thriving and productive part of the global community.

The Communist Leaders have accused Bo Xilai of corruption. Of course, as the old saying goes, people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

An editorial in a State-run newspaper advised Chinese troops to remain loyal to the Party, and ignore the rumors.

“We must unequivocally oppose all kinds of erroneous ideas and always listen to the party and follow the party.” (1)

They may whitewash Bo’s accomplishments. They may erase any mention of the Beijing violence from all news reports inside and coming from outside of China. However, they will never be able to erase the memories of the millions of Chinese that already know the truth.

As that truth spreads, the lies of the Party will become more apparent to all – and the end of the Party, and true freedom for the Chinese people, will finally be realized.
