The denial/smear campaign against witnesses over the past 70 plus years seems to be fraying at the seams as those who initiated and maintained the cloak of secrecy have aged and begun to die off. The reveal that UFOs exist isn’t new. It began soon after the news of a possible UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico and subsequent military denial or what many feel was a cover-up.
Some of those who claim to have witnessed or have secret inside knowledge about UFOs are considered highly credible sources, some even claim to have had access to classified UFO information. Their stories are intriguing and many believe are true. What do you think?
Former Astronaut Edgar “Ed” Mitchell was very vocal about his belief in UFOS. He discussed how he came to the conclusion that UFOs are real in the documentary, “The Phoenix Lights, We Are Not Alone” (2).
Mitchel said, “Because of my openness to these things [UFOS] I did have many of the old timers in the military and the intelligence community over the years wanting to get it off their chests before they passed away; [they] allowed me to interview them and talk to them about it. And so my ideas became fairly well solidified in the fact we’ve been visited.” (3)
Mitchell Explains How the UFO Cover-Up Began
Within the documentary, Edgar Mitchell expertly gives the chronology of how a potential UFO cover-up came into being. He explains that after WWII, The Air Force was separated from the Army and President Truman founded the CIA. Mitchel states that the two new organizations were “totally in disarray, new-founded, didn’t know what they were doing after WWII and not really re-organized yet.”
In the documentary, Mitchell reports that Truman convened a “high-level committee” to address the UFO phenomenon. The committee determined that the UFO phenomenon was alien. If the UFOs were hostile, the military admitted it could do nothing about it with no defenses against such high technology. Their only choice was to deny the existence of the threat. The 1947 National Security Act “validated that deception and covered it up and allowed the group to go underground.”
Mitchell described how this militarized industrial complex gained such a stronghold over the truth and why the cover-up began as well as who has benefited from it. Clearly, it wasn’t the average American benefiting, but private industries and of course, the military.
Mitchell (85) died February 4, 2016. His career was varied. He served as a Captain in the USN and went on to serve as an American naval officer, “aviator, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, Ufologist, and NASA astronaut”. He was the Pilot for the Apollo 14 Lunar Module. “He spent nine hours working on the lunar surface in the Fra Mauro Highlands region, making him the sixth person to walk on the Moon” (4).
Colonel Philip Corso
“Let there be no doubt. Alien technology harvested from the infamous saucer crash in Roswell, N.Mex., in July 1947 led directly to the development of the integrated circuit chip, laser and fiber optic technologies, Particle beams, Electromagnetic propulsion systems, Depleted uranium projectiles, Stealth capabilities, and many others! How do I know? I was in charge! (A matter of public record) I think the kids on this planet are wise to the truth, and I think we ought to give it to them. I think they deserve it” (5).
Colonel Philip Corso had a distinguished military career. There is quite a bit of controversy surrounding Corso’s testimony since he was unable to offer any proof/documentation of his claims. Many people believe that Corso’s career gives his testimony credibility (6).
He’s not alone. Many witnesses have come forward during their twilight years, claiming they want to get their secrets off their chests. Regardless if you believe stories without evidence, the tales of UFOs and government cover-ups are noteworthy when they are told by trained observers.
During his last years, Col Corso wrote a book titled, “The Day After Roswell” (pub. 1997). It wasn’t until his commanding officer General Arthur Trudeau died that Corso broke his silence. He claimed that the vow of silence he made to the General had finally ended with his friend’s death. Corso revealed what he knew about UFOs, Roswell and the government cover-up (7).
Some of Col Corso’s notable positions included:
–> Chief of US Counter Intelligence Corps in Rome
–> 1945, Corso “arranged for the safe passage of 10,000 Jewish World War II refugees out of Rome to the British Mandate of Palestine”
–> Personal emissary (Vatican) to Giovanni Battista Montini and Pope Paul VI, during the “Nazi Rat Lines” period
–> Chief of Special Projects branch of Intelligence Division, Far East Command (Korean War 1950–1953)
–> Staff of President Eisenhower’s National Security Council
–> Chief of Pentagon’s Foreign Technology desk in Army Research and Development, working under Lt. Gen. Arthur Trudeau
Astronaut Gordon Cooper
“I think there were extraterrestrial pilots flying,” Astronaut Gordon Cooper stated during a Sirus Disclosure interview. Cooper was referring to the 12-16 saucer shapes objects that his squadron was sent to check out while stationed in Germany (1951).
Cooper claims he had two encounters with UFOs before landing at NASA. This first encounter during his post in Germany wasn’t to be his only one (8).
The next encounter occurred when he was in charge of the installation of a precision landing facility along the edge of a dry lake. A camera crew was filming the process when a saucer flew over them and landed in the dry lake. The crew moved out into the dry lake to film the craft. Cooper described how the tripod landing gear retraced and the UFO flew away.
He ordered the crew to get the film developed and began making calls to his superiors. Ordered to send the film directly to Washington (Pentagon), by the time the crew returned with the developed film, a courier arrived and took the film before they had a chance to view. Cooper said he held the film to the light and looked at the frames. He said it was a very good film of the craft that revealed a lot of details.
Once more, it’s the credentials that lend authenticity to Cooper’s UFO claims. Leroy Gordon “Gordo” Cooper, Jr. died in 2004 (77 years old). He was a Colonel when he retired from the USAF (United States Air Force) in 1970 (9).
–> Aerospace engineer
–> Test pilot (USAF)
–> One of seven original astronauts in Project Mercury
–> First manned space program of the United States
–> Command Pilot of Gemini 5
First CIA Director, Vice Admiral R. H. Hillenkoetter
The New York Times article, “AIR FORGE ORDER ON ‘SAUCERS’ CITED; Pamphlet by the Inspector General Called Objects a ‘Serious Business’” first appeared in the paper in 1960. It is odd that the word “Force” is misspelled as “Forge” (10).
According to Want to Know website, this misspelling made it difficult to find in the NY Times archives. Want to Know website posted the article on its website (11).
Featured is a statement on UFOs made by Vice Admiral R. H. Hillenkoetter (Ret.) who was a Pearl Harbor attack survivor, the first Director of the CIA (1947-1950) and a committee board member. Hillenkoetter states, “It is time for the truth to be brought out in open Congressional hearings.”
A statement issued by then acting inspector general Maj. Gen. Richard E. O’Keefe, quotes Hillenkoetter. The article explains that the, “Air Force confirmed that the document had been issued.”
According to the NY Times, the statement was sent to the Senate Science and Astronautics Committee in an effort to “call attention to revised Air Force regulations concerning unidentified flying objects.”
Vice Admiral R. H. Hillenkoetter said that “behind the scenes, high-ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned about the UFO’s.”
This was just the beginning of his message. He continued, “But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense.” But it wasn’t just the public that was being intimidated, “to hide the facts, the Air Force has silenced its personnel.” This was achieved according to the Times, “through the issuance of a regulation.”
Admiral Hillenkoetter’s Background
Military Wikia states that The CIA was under the US State Department. Frank Wisner was appointed Director of the State Department (12).
After the failure of the CIA to have any “intelligence warning about North Korea’s invasion” in 1950, Truman replaced Hillenkoetter with a new CIA Director. Hillenkoetter returned to active naval duty serving in the Korean War and other tours until he retired in 1957.
According to Wikia, Hillenkoetter was a classmate of Keyhoe at the Naval Academy. After his retirement, he served on the Board of Governors (1957-1962) of Donald Edward Keyhoe’s organization National Investigations Committee On Aerial Phenomena (NICOAP) (13).
An American Marine Corps naval aviator, aviation writer and Author UFO books, Keyhoe was also a controversial UFO researcher (1897- 1988) and was interviewed about UFOs by Mike Wallace.
There have been several American Presidents reported to have witnessed a UFO flying in American airspace. Two of those were quite public about their sightings. Reagan and Carter (14).
Reagan and his wife, Nancy, were late to a dinner party due to watching a UFO. Lucille Ball discusses the party and how the couple arrived an hour late, excited to tell their fellow dinner guests about their sighting (15). Reagan’s next UFO sighting occurred onboard a jet while he was Governor of California and was corroborated by his pilot, who also witnessed the phenomenon.
President Jimmy Carter repeatedly discussed his UFO experience openly in the public and with numerous reporters.
In one such interview Carter stated, “I was gathered in a school yard with about 20 other men and we saw a bright [round] light appear in the distant western skies. And it got closer and closer. And when it was just above the tree tops it changed color and then stayed there for a while. And then it disappeared into the distance. And, none of us could ever imagine what it was. And, I still don’t know what it was” (16).
Need for Evidence that UFOs Are Real
Even the eyewitness testimonies of people who are highly trained observers and considered reliable account are questioned when no proof is presented. While their credentials lend weight to their reports, the stigma of reporting a UFO is imbued into the American culture and colors everything about the topic.
With the aging and subsequent dying out of the old regime, many people hope this aspect of the UFO topic may finally be replaced so the truth can be explored.
