With the mapping of the human genome and the advancement of stem cell research, the next question to be answered is what will prevent science from altering the genetic material or DNA in humans to create super humans or designer babies? Some scientists argue that the best possible use of such research is to use it as a preventative or cure tool. Many point to the past decade of advances in this field. Others believe that the 2001 genetic manipulation of 30 children was the beginning of what might be the point of no return with such interference in the natural order. And many scientists worry that the next step will be “designer babies” or super humans.
The consensus of the majority of watchdog groups who keep tabs on Big Agra’s newest GMO and GE crops were outraged in October, 2013. The headlines flashed “World Food Prize Sham” and “Thousands Protest” as the cherished prize was awarded to Monsanto, a company many groups accuse of poisoning the world’s crops with their genetically modified seeds. The World Food Prize is considered agriculture’s Nobel Prize. Monsanto is the leader in developing corn and other crops genetically altered to resist the company’s pesticides. The pesticides are sprayed onto the crops but the genetically modified crop is impervious to the harmful chemicals. The researchers responsible for the GMO crops believe they have found a solution to world hunger and future demands on food production. Opponents believe that companies like Monsanto overstate their success and point to the cross-pollination of GMO crops with non-GMO crops. They cite land pollution products like Monsanto’s Roundup Ready as creating runoff. Some researchers claim that the GMO crops are harmful to humans, while the creators of GMO crops argue such claims are unfounded.
Fire and ice are opposite elements yet both have been found in Antarctica. Beneath a thick layer of ice lies a recently discovered volcano. Whenever the volcano erupts, scientists predict it’ll speed up ice loss and possibly raise global sea levels – that is, when it erupts. Unfortunately, scientists cannot predict when this event might occur. It appears that the millions of years old volcano has erupted before. The volcano sits on top of raised land that scientists determined to be the hardened accumulation of previous eruptions. How many times the volcano has erupted is purely a guessing game. With the aid of radar imaging, the volcano is comparable to the above water Mount Waesche (Antarctica) eruption 8,000 years ago. The Mount Waesche volcano was discovered during the flight of the 1940 United States Antarctic Service Expedition of the US Coast Guard. It was named after the Admiral of the expedition.
Whether or not it was their intention to set fire to the former plantation home, the police arrested a group of self-proclaimed amateur ghost hunters. The LeBeau Plantation House in New Orleans didn’t take long to burn to the ground. The seven men (ages 17 – 31) were charged with “arson, simple burglary, trespassing and criminal damage worth more than $50,000”. By the time the fire department arrived, there was no saving the 1850s plantation mansion rumored to be haunted. The home had been many things since construction was completed in 1854, including a boarding house and later a hotel. It was even used as an illegal gambling house at one point in its long history. Boarded up, the house was protected by an eight foot fence that encased the property and bore many no trespassing warning signs in an attempt of discouraging curiosity seekers and even supposed ghost hunters. Owned by the Arlene and Joseph Meraux Charitable Foundation, known as the Meraux Foundation, the charity organization had just begun its plans to renovate the home and bring it back to its former grandeur. The group of careless trespassers put an end to those dreams when they set the house on fire in the early morning hours of November 21, 2013. It was reported by several news media that the men had grown frustrated in their short-lived investigation and hoped to incite the spirits with the threat of torching the mansion. Such tactics as of antagonizing ghosts is commonly shown on various ghost hunter TV shows.
It’s been called publicity war, social media propaganda and a network of advocacy. It depends who is talking which term is used to describe the social media units the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office set up. The mission is to create a network of advocacy for Israel against what many within the Israeli government have termed as social media attacks in a “prolonged and extreme campaign of de-legitimization” of Israel. The social media units are made up of Israeli university students. In turn for their efforts posting pro-Israel on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, the students will receive scholarships. The posts will reflect positive aspects of the Israeli government and being a democratic country. While to the outside world these posts will appear unguided and spontaneous, the truth is quite the opposite. This social media project places the government behind the curtain as the puppeteer directing what appear to be independently thinking, acting students speaking out.
It sounds like a sequel to the 1973 movie Soylent Green. Yet, many food safety watchdogs are warning that it’s possible that some foods you eat could contain human DNA. Has life truly begun to imitate art? Do Frankenstein foods now mean that the warning phrase “soylent green is people” must also be modified to “rice and gummy bears are people”? As horrifying and repulsing it may be to most people, it’s true that human DNA is in some food products, including gelatin and in a few cases, crop medicines!
It’s impossible to know if what you’re eating is a GMO product or not. That’s because food companies who use GMO products have spent a great deal of money to fight the public’s demand for appropriate labeling. It’s easy to understand why the food companies don’t want the public to have this product labeling since, according to Greenpeace, over 70% of the food products sold in Canada contain GMO. And, consumers have no way of knowing this since the food isn’t labeled to alert them that they are ingesting GMO foods. Unaware, most people in the US were eating GMO corn in the early 1990s. So why is rice under the microscope again? Two words – Golden Rice. New GE Rice – Golden Rice Golden Rice is a GE (Genetically Engineered) rice created to provide vitamin A to address VAD (Vitamin A Deficiency). VAD is very prevalent in developing or poverty stricken countries. Greenpeace opposes Golden Rice and points out that: “The solutions to fight VAD and other nutrient deficiencies are known, available and cost effective, what is lacking however is the political will and determination to put them in place.”
Across the Internet, there’s discussion of the Invisible Bug Biting Syndrome (IBBS). Some claim that IBBS is becoming epidemic while others discount the complaints of suffers as being nothing more than a psychological illness known as Ekbom Syndrome (ES). These medical professionals dismiss patients’ claims similarly to how many blame psychological delusion for those suffering from Morgellons Disease. Still, others are adamant that those suffering from constant itching, sensations of bugs crawling over their bodies and small red marks left in their wake are actually suffering from a reaction to chemicals found in factory grown beef and Genetically Modified (GMO) foods. Can these explanations be correct? While psychological delusions are very real mental disorders and offer reasonable and plausible explanations, what about the people who are mentally sound yet continue to suffer these symptoms? There may be another explanation according to some laypeople who have researched IBBS – mite infestation. Even though entomologists, such as those in the Department of Entomology of the University of Georgia, correct people making these claims by reminding them that mites (bird or rat) do not bite, those suffering from the agony of constant attack are not swayed.
Scientists declared that the February 15, 2013 meteoroid that fire-balled into Russia was a wake-up call. In fact, the Chelyabinsk Meteorite is being touted as the new “gold standard” for asteroid impact modeling. The impact of the meteorite that sent a shockwave around the world twice had a far-reaching impact by inspiring “what if” scenario discussions. Top Secret Writers reported in October 2013 about the international conference to discuss and create a global earth defense against future asteroids. On the heels of these discussions is the first Chelyabinsk Meteorite impact study published November 7, 2013 by a team of researchers. Olga Popova of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, meteor astronomer Peter Jenniskens of NASA Ames Research Center and the Carl Sagan Center of the SETI Institute led a team of 57 other researchers from nine countries. Fragments of recovered meteorites were gathered and studied. The path and impact area were examined extensively. A unique aspect of the fireball was the number of eyewitnesses to the event. Their observations of the event that left over 1,200 Russians injured have aided the researchers as have the various photos and video footage taken of the event.
When the word cult is used, it’s typically used to describe a fanatical sect, but the Salvia cult isn’t a typical cult. The answer to what the saliva cult is depends on the person responding. If it’s someone opting to try salvia as a recreational drug, chances are you’ll get a very negative response about the mind altering plant. Few people abusing the plant’s hallucinogenic properties have pleasant experiences. So why is it growing in popularity among party-goers? Mostly, because it’s a fast and short trip that doesn’t have any lasting side-effects. At least, none that are presently known. People are curious and want to experience salvia firsthand, but many are only one-time users, because their trips are not euphoric and often frightening.
