DOD Ships Live Anthrax to 10 Different Military Bases

DOD Ships Live Anthrax to 10 Different Military Bases
If you get a box in the mail from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), don’t open it. It could be live anthrax (1).

And we thought the anthrax scare was over.

If you’re of the mind that the government can do nothing right, this anthrax scare will prove you right.

Several U.S. military bases — nine in the U.S. and one in South Korea — received a mysterious package from the Department of Defense and that package turned out to be live anthrax.

The bases were expecting anthrax spores that had been killed by radiation. For that reason, they didn’t put measures in place to protect their employees from exposure to the dangerous bacteria.

It’s unclear how many people were exposed to the live anthrax, but there are 22 people in South Korea receiving “preventive” treatment.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia is investigating the events that led to the exposure. CDC is the U.S.’s regulatory agency on dangerous pathogen research.

This is Not the First Time the U.S. Scared People With Anthrax

Of course, this is not the first time US citizens have been terrorized with anthrax.

Last year, a researcher assigned to the CDC was reassigned after live anthrax bacteria was mailed to another CDC lab due to a failure to kill it first (2).

At that time, the CDC’s excuse was that researchers were working with a new way to kill the bacteria.

They can’t use that excuse this time. Irradiation has been the common method ever since.

According to, in August last year, not long after the first anthrax scare, the U.S. government staged a pathogen research stand down (3).

Some biohazard scientists are skeptical as to whether that included the DoD or not (1).

Hold On, It Gets Worse: The Pentagon May Have Been A Target

Not only did the DoD send live anthrax spores to U.S. military bases in the continental states and South Korea, but it turns out that locations in Australia and Canada may have received some, as well.

And, it’s possible that the Pentagon may have received a shipment too (4).

One lab in Maryland has confirmed that it did receive live anthrax from the DoD.

All of this should make you wonder, what do you make of an agency whose primary mission is to protect you from biohazard threats becoming one itself?

Do you feel any safer now that you know the U.S. military is sending live anthrax to its own forces around the world, and might actually have even sent the deadly pathogen to itself at the Pentagon?
