Texas is where the majority of the operation will take place and where much of the opposition towards Jade Helm has been circulating.
The troops are mostly from Special Operations forces. Jade Helm will be one of the biggest military training operations ever to be carried out on US soil. The Jade Helm exercise takes place from July 15 – September 15, 2015 and involves Navy Seals, Green Berets and the 82nd Airborne Division covering southwest America.
According to an article in the Boston Globe, Jade Helm took place because the military says it needs to update training exercises. In a statement, the military said it “periodically conducts training exercises such as these to practice special warfare tasks, which help protect the nation against foreign enemies.”
The military added that they are seeking terrain that might be similar to areas in the Middle East where many US military missions are being carried out.
During the training exercise, which occurred during both the day and night, the military said they will be developing “tactics, techniques, and procedures for emerging concepts in Special Operations warfare.”
Conspiracies Surrounding Jade Helm 15
However, Operation Jade Helm 15 has become the subject of significant attention not because it is one of the largest military exercises conducted by the US on domestic soil but because it is associated with conspiracy theories.
It has activated the wary amongst conspiracy theorists that the exercise is an attempt by the US military to prepare for the imposition of martial law and is really a cover up for a military takeover.
Outspoken conspiracy theorist and radio show host Alex Jones was quick to infiltrate such an idea into public thought. Earlier this year, Jones warned people on his website InfoWars of the trend of “domestic militarisation”, writing:
Jade Helm 15 is more than just a military exercise, it’s also an exercise of the new field in geo-spatial intelligence using human domain analytics to map the politics and thoughts of any nation, state, city, right down to the individual” (2).
Jones managed to obtain a document from a veteran military official which included a “Special Operations” map. The map listed the states of Utah, Texas and areas of California as being “hostile” for military exercise purposes.
Jones viewed the map as a warning that the mentioned states were going to be invaded. Earlier this year he warned radio listeners of the Jade Helm exercise, saying:
“They’re going to practice breaking into things and stuff. This is going to be hellish…. Now this is just a cover for deploying the military on the streets… This is an invasion.”
To help alleviate concerns that Jade Helm is really a military takeover, Texas governor Greg Abbott announced that state guards would be monitoring the exercise.
Abbott was also keen to inform that Texans were in support of the US military. In a press statement released in April 2015, Abbott spoke of how as a means of addressing the concerns of the exercise and to ensure Texas remains safe and informed about military procedures, he is directing the Texas Safe Guard to monitor the eight-week training operations (3).
Meanwhile many of Jade Helm 15’s opponents remain concerned that the operation is not necessary and that there will be more to come.
As the Boston Global highlights, many worry that such procedures won’t be an exercise anymore but will be a new way of life.
