Edgar Mitchel Tribute: One of the Only Astronauts to Believe in UFOs
45 years since the day he became the sixth man to set foot on the moon, former NASA astronaut Edgar Mitchell died on February 4, 2016. The Apollo 14 astronaut passed away in a hospice in Florida following a short illness.

Mitchell was born on September 17, 1930 in Texas. Throughout his colourful and varied career, Mitchell was an American naval officer, a test pilot, an aeronautical engineer, a NASA astronaut and a ufologist.

Mitchell’s contribution to the study of space was fertile. After joining NASA in 1966, Mitchel was involved with designing and testing the lunar module that was used in the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. He was a member of the Apollo 13 crew, which failed to reach the moon due to a disastrous explosion while en route to space.

Mitchell was part of the crew on board the Apollo 14, which landed on the moon in 1971. During the Apollo 14 mission, Mitchell spent nine hours on the moon’s surface in the Fra Mauro Highlands region. Mitchell claims that on his way back to Earth during the Apollo 14 mission he had experienced a powerful ‘deliberation and reflection’ experience.

As (1) RT reports, in his 1996 autobiography, Edgar Mitchel wrote about his experience on the moon and in space:

“What I experienced during that three-day trip home was nothing short of an overwhelming sense of universal connectedness. It occurred to me that the molecules of my body and the molecules of the spaceship itself were manufactured long ago in the furnace of one of the ancient stars that burned in the heavens about me.”

A Spiritual Conversion

The former NASA astronaut upheld the view that during his time in space he had gone through a “spiritual conversion”, which led him to believe that aliens had visited planet Earth.

Being keen to speak up of his extra-terrestrial beliefs, Mitchell became quite a controversial figure. In 2008 during a radio interview, Mitchell spoke of how he believed the US government has been involved in deliberately concealing the existence of alien life forms.

During the interview, Mitchell (2) spoke of how he was ‘privileged’ to have been ‘briefed’ on the UFO phenomena.
“I happen to have been privileged enough to be in on the fact that we’ve been visited on this planet and the UFO phenomena is real. Some of us have been privileged to have been briefed on some of it.”

In a film named (3) ‘The Phoenix Lights, We Are Not Alone’, Mitchell explains the UFO cover-up. The former astronaut spoke about how, after World War II, President Truman convened a very high level committee to examine the alien phenomena.

The Committee, according to Mitchell, came to the conclusion that it was alien and the military said if they were hostile there was nothing that could be done about it and therefore decided to hush the alien phenomena up and create the National Security Act of 1947. The Act validated and allowed the group to go underground, the beginning of the entire denial of this phenomenon to cloak and discourage investigation, Mitchel declared.

Government Fear

Mitchell believed that the prolonged cover-up stems from the fear of the government not being able to stay in power and control.

The former Apollo 14 astronaut said in (4) public that he was 90 percent certain that many of the UFO sightings recorded since the 1940s belong to extra-terrestrial life. In 1998, he urged the US government to publicly acknowledge what they knew about alien life form.

As Top Secret Writers wrote in a report about the odds that NASA will find evidence of an alien civilization, it is not uncommon for scientists to shy away from alien civilization theories (5).

Being the sixth man to walk on the moon and boasting such a successful and high-status career, Edgar Mitchell’s beliefs and theories related to UFOs and aliens have to be amongst the most credible of all UFO believers.

Mitchell was a sweet guy, dedicated to pushing back the frontier of the unknown — and we corresponded amiably about it over the decades. I told him that the payoff for such long-shot studies was so high that I was glad people of his caliber were devoting their lives to it. I didn’t think then, and don’t think now, he ever found anything genuinely anomalous. As one of handful of people on the planet who actually READ his Apollo-14 ESP experience report [it’s not on line], I concluded it was mushy wish-fulfillment massaging random results until an unexpected pattern emerged, then declaring victory. Sad, but glorious quest, producing nothing but confidence that it’s one more ‘frontier’ where, if men of Mitchell’s devotion can’t find anything, there’s probably nothing there.
